When you imagine hearing or seeing an object the brain registers it as if it were really happening. When you engage in vivid imagery it can have a powerful effect on mind and body.
Guided imagery
In the 70`s the Simontons pioneered the use of guided imagery, working with people with cancer, their patients were first given suggestions for relaxation and then guided through visualising their blood cells fighting off the cancer cells. They found that many of their patients symptoms improved and they had many cases of spontaneous remission.
Patients who are anxious and worried about their illness do take longer to heal than people who are relaxed.
People who practice relaxation techniques on a daily basis are often successful in decreasing any anxiety and fear about illness and other daily stresses. Their symptoms can decrease and stabilise.
When you learn relaxation skills you increase the ability to bring involuntary bodily functions like heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and muscle tension under your control.
